Specifications
and Requirements
for Printed Components
Our
Design/Labeling Department is committed to producing high quality
packaging for our clients in a timely manner. We hope that by informing
you of our basic requirements, we can help assure you that your
labeling and packaging materials will be produced to industry specifications
as quickly as possible.
Platforms
We can accept label and packaging design information on 3.5"
high-density disks, CD-ROM, SyQuest 44 & 88MB, and ZIP disks
in the following formats:
Quark
Express
Corel Draw*
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Pagemaker
Adobe Illustrator*
* Save all fonts as curves in these platforms.
Customers
must include all imported graphics and fonts on your disk. A black
& white or color printout of your document also must accompany
customer disks.
Color
CMYK or Pantone colors only. RGB will not be accurately reproduced
in print. Fleetwood can produce in-house labels using a CMYK process.
In house printing will not be 100% accurate when using Pantone colors.
Do not send files in which color separations are made in Photoshop
regardless of channel usage unless you are printing
4-color process.
Film and Printing Requirements
Composite plate ready film. We use a variety of printing processes
including: 1-color, 2-color, PMS, spot, and 4-color process. One
complete piece of film is required for each ink. This means that
all color separations, halftones, type, etc. need to be stripped
together and composited with crop marks and registration marks on
all negatives.
Film must be in printers spreads, film negative, right reading,
emulsion side down. For CD Printing see CD Screen Printing Specifications.
A color matchprint must be sent with each individual job, or Fleetwood
can provide matchprints at an additional cost. Fleetwood will not
be responsible for colors if a color matchprint is not furnished.
Also, a mock-up needs to be furnished for page placement, folding,
etc. We can also provide 3M Rainbows or bluelines from electronic
files.
Templates are available for layout purposes. All files must be to
the exact specifications of the job you are having printed plus
a 1/16" to 1/8" bleed for trimming purposes. (Absolute
minimum bleed is 1/16").
I. TAPE FORMAT
Tape format may be R-DAT, SONY 1630/1610 digital,
SONY F1 digital
(Beta or VHS), 1/4" Analog tape, CD, CDR or Cassette Tape.
(R-DAT, CD or CDR is preferred).
- Analog master may utilize Dolby A, B or SR and DBX
Type 1 noise reduction.
- Analog tape speed must be either 7.5, 15, or 30
ips.
- DAT master should be recorded at 44.1 KHs without
emphasis, if possible.
II. REFERENCE TONES
The following reference tones are necessary for
accurate duplication:
- R-DAT and U-Matic: At the beginning of the master,
place a 1 KHz tone (about 30 seconds) which is approximately 5
decibels below the peak program level.
- Analog: At the beginning of the master, place 1KHz,
and 100 KHz tones (about 30 seconds each) at 0 VU. If utilizing
Dolby noise reduction, also include the Dolby reference tone.
- Do not use noise reduction of reference tones.
III. QUALITY ASSURANCE SHEET
A. Prepare an accurate list of beginning and ending points for each
side of the cassette. This should include the song titles and exact
total time for each side of the cassette.
- On all digital formats, leave at least one minute
blank between sides.
- When using R-DAT format, please include start IDs
at the start of each side.
- If using only one analog tape reel, indicate the
side break with a portion of leader tape.
B. Please indicate any unusual noises or general notes
regarding the quality of the recording.
IV. PROGRAM LENGTH
Durations greater than 46 minutes per side are not recommended.
V. MAKE A COPY
Do not supply the ONLY master copy you have. Please keep a safety
copy.
VI. SUGGESTIONS
Sibilance distortion:
Due to the characteristics of cassette tape, it is suggested
that any harsh sounding sibilants (ss ts, orshs)
be de-essed prior to mixdown. This is especially noticeable on lead
vocals and spoken word. If a de-esser is not available, an attenuation
of 3 decibels at 8 KHz (using a graphic equalizer) is usually sufficient.
De-essing is possible after mixdown, but is not recommended because
it may have an undesirable effect on any co-existing music or sounds.
